Walking and rambling in the Cotswolds

There is a huge choice of walks in the local area and the hotel is very near to the 102 mile picturesque Cotswold Way which runs from Chipping Campden to Bath.

Berkeley Castle is one of the most remarkable buildings in Britain and possibly the most outstanding example of Mediaeval domestic architecture in the country. Where other Castles were romanticised or "modernised" by the Georgians or the Victorians, Berkeley quietly survived as what it is: a Norman fortress with an enclosing curtain wall, built and enlarged through the mediaeval period and beyond into a secure, comfortable, substantial home with courtyards, towers and battlements to explore.

Come rain or shine, there's plenty for families to do at Cattle Country. Two huge barns house giant slides and loads of soft play equipment. Outdoor activities include Britain's biggest jumping pillow, a 14m climbing net, a giant castle, trampolines, a willow maze, mini golf and a boating lake, plus much more.

The mini train takes visitors through the park to the Animal Encounters area where you can see a wide range of animals including wallabies, Gloucester Old Spot pigs, ducks and deers to name a few!

The new Cabot Circus shopping centre in Bristol is around 20 minutes away from The Gables by car. There are over 120 stores including Harvey Nichols and House of Fraser, so it’s perfect for a dose of true retail therapy!

A visit to Bristol Zoo is your passport for a day trip to an amazing world of animals, all within the safety of an award winning 12 acre gardens. Meet over 450 species of exotic, endangered and just plain cute animals from the four corners of the globe. As well as being a fun place to visit, Bristol Zoo Gardens is dedicated to conservation and is involved in international breeding programmes.

The Avon Valley Railway has steam trains and scenic boat tours operating throughout the summer. They also run events such as "A Day Out with Thomas" for children and the "The Real Ale" festival for grown ups. The AVR now offers a six mile return train ride along the former Mangotsfield to Bath Green Park branch of the old Midland Railway, and the chance to see the River Avon valley from an aspect that cars cannot reach. Based at Bitton Station, midway between Bristol and Bath, this former Midland Railway station has been painstakingly restored from a derelict state to provide visitors with refreshment and toilet facilities, a railway shop, a pleasant garden, and outdoor seating.

This grand house was built between 1691 and 1702 and is set in 272 acres of garden, including a deer park. The house is now a National Trust property and contains some lavish collections of 17th and 18th century art.

Horse Racing

The Gables is perfectly situated for visiting Cheltenham Race Course (28 miles away) for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March and The Badminton Horse Trials in May.

Since its opening in June 1999, the Millennium Stadium has welcomed over 1.3 Million visitors per year. With the first retractable roof in the UK, the Stadium is a multi-purpose, all round venue for sporting events, concerts and exhibitions.
