Filming for Wolf Hall, the six part BBC drama adapted from Hilary Mantel’s award winning novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, took place at many historic locations in Gloucestershire and Avon, within easy reach of our hotel. Walking and rambling in the Cotswolds

There is a huge choice of walks in the local area and the hotel is very near to the 102 mile picturesque Cotswold Way which runs from Chipping Campden to Bath.

Berkeley Castle is one of the most remarkable buildings in Britain and possibly the most outstanding example of Mediaeval domestic architecture in the country. Where other Castles were romanticised or "modernised" by the Georgians or the Victorians, Berkeley quietly survived as what it is: a Norman fortress with an enclosing curtain wall, built and enlarged through the mediaeval period and beyond into a secure, comfortable, substantial home with courtyards, towers and battlements to explore.

Come rain or shine, there's plenty for families to do at Cattle Country. Two huge barns house giant slides and loads of soft play equipment. Outdoor activities include Britain's biggest jumping pillow, a 14m climbing net, a giant castle, trampolines, a willow maze, mini golf and a boating lake, plus much more.

The mini train takes visitors through the park to the Animal Encounters area where you can see a wide range of animals including wallabies, Gloucester Old Spot pigs, ducks and deers to name a few!

With an astounding array of wildlife from water voles to waders, hares to dragonflies, Slimbridge is home to the world's largest collection of swans, geese, and ducks. It is also the only place in the world where you can see all six species of Flamingo.

Newark Park stands proud on top of the Cotswold escarpment, looking down into the Ozleworth valley to the Mendips beyond. This remote corner of south Gloucestershire is a secret and unspoilt place, with barely a sign of modern life visible in any direction. A place of architectural intrigue, quaint gardens and sprawling parkland there is much to see and do at Newark.

Launched in July 2013, and located just off junction 17 of the M5 motorway, the Wild Place is a fun, family attraction that provides adventure, play and learning in an open space of natural beauty, whilst protecting threatened habitats on our doorsteps and around the globe.

The project is home to an array of endangered animals from Madagascar, east Africa and the Congo, including zebras, elands and lemurs, and you’ll find beautiful gardens to explore and a variety of different outdoor learning activities.

The Mall, situated off junction 17 of the M5, has 135 top name stores, restaurants and cafes with 7,000 free parking spaces.  It's a great place to shop, meet frineds and relax.

At AirHop Bristol you will have the chance to experience the exhilaration of flying through the air. AirHop Bristol is the world’s largest trampoline park with over 135 interconnected trampolines that go across the floor and up the walls.

Concorde at Filton

After its spectacular flight home in 2003, the Concorde 216 is now at a temporary home in Filton until the new heritage centre is completed. Tours run 3 times a day and need to be booked in advance, please call 0870 3000 578 or click on the weblink in the title.

The new Cabot Circus shopping centre in Bristol is around 20 minutes away from The Gables by car. There are over 120 stores including Harvey Nichols and House of Fraser, so it’s perfect for a dose of true retail therapy!

Located in the famous Bristol harbour, the new Bristol Aquarium is a must see attraction for nature lovers. Go and admire the tropical sharks, the beautiful seahorses, and sit down and be amazed in their undersea tunnel.

Abandoned in mid-construction towards the end of the nineteenth century, Victorian Gothic Woodchester Mansion provides a fascinating insight into the skills of Victorian craftsman. With fireplaces suspended high on walls, and doors leading nowhere, this is an experience not to be missed.

Open: 1 April to 31 October, Tuesday to Sunday, and Bank Holiday Mondays, 11.00 am to 5.00 pm with last tickets 4.00pm.

With hundreds of exhibits and live shows, At-Bristol is a must-see for all ages and takes you on an incredible journey exploring the inner workings of the world around us.

A visit to Bristol Zoo is your passport for a day trip to an amazing world of animals, all within the safety of an award winning 12 acre gardens. Meet over 450 species of exotic, endangered and just plain cute animals from the four corners of the globe. As well as being a fun place to visit, Bristol Zoo Gardens is dedicated to conservation and is involved in international breeding programmes.

Situated outside the beautiful Cotswold town of Painswick, and famous for its snowdrop display, the Rococo Garden is a fascinating step back to a flamboyant and sensual period of English Garden Design, when gardens were almost theatrical sets used as a backdrop to decadent garden parties. This gem of a garden, which was originally laid out in the early 18th century, is set in a hidden Cotswold valley with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

The Avon Valley Railway has steam trains and scenic boat tours operating throughout the summer. They also run events such as "A Day Out with Thomas" for children and the "The Real Ale" festival for grown ups. The AVR now offers a six mile return train ride along the former Mangotsfield to Bath Green Park branch of the old Midland Railway, and the chance to see the River Avon valley from an aspect that cars cannot reach. Based at Bitton Station, midway between Bristol and Bath, this former Midland Railway station has been painstakingly restored from a derelict state to provide visitors with refreshment and toilet facilities, a railway shop, a pleasant garden, and outdoor seating.

This grand house was built between 1691 and 1702 and is set in 272 acres of garden, including a deer park. The house is now a National Trust property and contains some lavish collections of 17th and 18th century art.

Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, is one of the most spectacular tree gardens in the world with an historical collection of over 3,000 different trees and shrub species many of which are rare or endangered in their native lands. Covering six hundred acres, the arboretum is an inspiring place to relax, get back to nature and indulge your senses.

The Severn Bore is one of Britain's few truly spectacular natural phenomena. It is a large surge wave that can be seen in the estuary of the River Severn, where the tidal range is the 2nd highest in the world, being as much as 50 feet (approx. 15.4m).

An area of 140 lakes set in 40 square miles of countryside, the Cotswold Water Park has country parks, angling lakes, sailing clubs, picturesque villages, campsites and country inns so there is plenty for everyone to explore!

There are over 17 Farmers' Markets in Gloucestershire, including well - established ones at Stroud, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Cirencester.

Horse Racing

The Gables is perfectly situated for visiting Cheltenham Race Course (28 miles away) for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March and The Badminton Horse Trials in May.

Since its opening in June 1999, the Millennium Stadium has welcomed over 1.3 Million visitors per year. With the first retractable roof in the UK, the Stadium is a multi-purpose, all round venue for sporting events, concerts and exhibitions.
