Berkley Castle

This beautiful and historic castle begun in 1117 still remains the home of the famous family who gave their name to numerous locations all over the world, notably Berkeley Square in London, Berkeley Hundred in Virginia and Berkeley University in California. Scene of the brutal murder of Edward II in 1327 and besieged by Cromwell's troops in 1645, the castle is steeped in history. The state apartments contain magnificent collections of furniture, tapestries and rare paintings by primarily English and Dutch masters. Part of the famous Berkeley silver is on display in the dining room.

Jenner Museum

Edward Jenner (1749 - 1823), a country house doctor in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, was intrigued by country-lore saying milkmaids who caught the mild cowpox could not catch deadly smallpox. He devised a crucial experiment involving a milkmaid, a young boy and a cow called 'Blossom'. As a consequence, smallpox has been eradicated from the Earth! Jenner's discovery has developed into one of the most important parts of modern medicine - Immunology.

Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust

WWT Slimbridge is one of nine wetland centres across the UK, founded by Sir Peter Scott in 1946. Now a world-renowned reserve for waterbirds set in 120 acres. Its new £6.2m visitor centre houses a wildlife art gallery, The Hanson Discovery Centre, the Waterside Restaurant, a cinema and the Sloane Observation Tower (which provides the best view of the Severn in the whole of Gloucestershire).

The City Museum and Art Gallery has been collecting archaeological finds, fine and decorative arts and natural history specimens representing Gloucester's rich heritage since 1860. The fascinating displays housed in a fine Victorian building in the heart of the City contain many items of national and international importance.
Gloucester Cathedral

The cathedral is situated in the centre of Gloucester off Westgate Street. Worship continues daily with sung evensong most days. The impressive nave has massive Norman pillars. From the nave move to the famous fan vaulted cloisters where scenes from the Harry Potter films were shot. Other features worth finding are the clock in the north transept, the tombs of Edward II and effigy of Robert Duke of Normandy.
